RIVERHEIGHTS

FOOTBALL ACADEMY

Our work at Riverheights FA is fuelled by our desire to abolish inequality and poverty in our society. We believe that every child is entitled to equal access to quality education, sport and cultural facilities.

To be a child means to play and dream without existential Angst. At Riverheights we provide the environment for children to be children.

Colonialism and Apartheid robbed the people of Namibia of their land, resources and livelihood.  The effects of the sustained and consistent attack on the humanity, dignity and self-worth of the people under the two systems are still evident today.

Programmes that aim to re
store the people’s humanity, dignity and self-worth are crucial to the development of our country.

By restoring people’s dignity and self-worth, we believe that people can reach their full human potential. The aim of the Riverheights FA is to empower the children; to make them dream, work towards realising their dreams and ultimately shape their own destiny.

The Riverheights FA provides a protected environment to children between the ages of 7 to 18 years where they can play, learn and grow into responsible and autonomous adults.

Our Vision

The Riverheights Football Academy is a football and education project, located at the Goreangab informal settlement area in Windhoek, Namibia.  The idea of the Riverheights Football Academy started as a result of an impromptu request by the children living in the area to form a football team.  It is rapidly growing into an exciting and promising project, where the children are provided with a safe place to play and nurture their talents.

The dream is to develop the Riverheights Football Academy (FA) into an oasis of hope, where children can dream, hope and learn in a protected environment to realise their full potential.

The Riverheights FA is a voluntary association established during September 2020.  At present it operates under the financial management of the Centre for People’s Resistance (“CPR”), which in turn is funded by the Nixon Marcus Public Law Office.

CPR is a legal trust that was officially launched on 1 May 2017 and registered on 19 April 2018. The trustees are Uno Katjipuka-Sibolile, Namupa Shivute and Nixon Marcus.

Uno Katjipuka and Nixon Marcus are the owners of Nixon Marcus Public Law Office.  Namupa Shivute is a freelance writer and activist presently based at Swakopmund.

Ronald Chari is the football coach who is employed by the football academy. He is responsible for coordinating the practice sessions of the children, and the matches played by the teams of the academy.

The Football Academy uses the power, beauty and energy of football to unlock and nurture the potential of children, who live in the poorest and socially neglected areas of Windhoek.

The values acquired on the football pitch such as commitment, respect and honesty are positively reinforced by programmes off the pitch in order to empower the children.

Two philosophies underpin the football academy. One is: “Life is a Team effort”. This essentially means that, our humanity is defined by how we care and look after our fellow human beings - and life in general. Another philosophy is: to never stop believing in our dreams – and to fight for them!

To create a place where children irrespective of the socio-economic conditions are able to play, dream and learn to realise their full potential in a safe and protected environment.

To create a society where all people are able to satisfy their spiritual, intellectual and material needs on the basis of a shared humanity (Ubuntu) and dignity for all.

About US

The development of the football field is a top priority for the Academy.  In order for our teams to play our desired brand of attacking football, characterized by ball possession and skillful passing of the ball a quality football field is a necessity.  With the financial help of the Centre for People’s Resistance and the generous assistance of a local company, Ilonga Civil & Mechanical Contractors, the Academy succeeded in clearing the bushes and levelling the ground.  Although this provides a better playing ground for our players more work remains to be done.  The Academy is hopeful that, in the not too distant future, it will be able to raise the necessary funds for the construction of an artificial pitch.

Development of a Football Pitch

Once the football academy is fully developed, the aim is to supplement the football activities with educational, cultural and social activities off the pitch, to help with the personal development of the children.

Talent support programme:  talented players will be linked with local football clubs to further enhance their skills.

Academic support programme: the children are assisted with homework and tutored in science and language subjects. The aim is to turn the school support programme eventually into a fully-fledged school.

Art, Cultural and Musical activities:  the children have the possibility of participating and partaking in extra murals, art, cultural and music classes.

Library: the children will have access to books and reading classes offered in the reading rooms of the library.

Nutrition and Gardening: children will be provided with meals from food produced in the local garden, which is cultivated with the assistance of the children and their parents.

Adult education programme: parents of the children will be able to participate in adult education programmes to improve their education.

Multimedia and Social media: Children will be able to watch educational films and be tutored in social media.

Clinic: A local clinic will provide primary health care and ensure that the children are healthy.  Local doctors will be approached to provide community service at the clinic.
